This is a guest post from one of our readers who recently visited Venice, Italy. She shares some great tips to save money during the Venice trip. Enjoy the post
Do you want to visit Venice? This is a great choice since there are countless really interesting things to do. Nobody can deny how unique this city is and how much it can change your life after just one visit. However, most of Venice is not that accessible to those that do not have enough money.
Unfortunately, to enjoy the city, you will need to save some cash. Fortunately, if you know what to do, you will be able to enjoy Venice even when on a tight budget. Venice’s gorgeous canals and historic buildings are accessible. This does include all the 117 islands that make up the city, all separated by bridges and canals.
Some of the best ways to enjoy Venice on a budget are obvious.
Like, going on one of the local tours since they allow you to connect with locals while you enjoy the numerous attractions just they know.
Others are not so obvious and require insider knowledge. This is what we will focus on in the following paragraphs.
Reduce flight ticket cost
Use travel hacking to fly Venice for free. Get travel credit cards, meet the minimum spend and earn the bonus miles. You can then use those miles to buy plane tickets.
When you pay the entire balance by the due date, you are using the card to your advantage, and not the bank’s advantage.
Rewards points, miles, and cashback are a great source of passive income. Follow sites like secretflying to get error pricing to avail that ridiculously low airfare. Follow thepointsguy and get daily airfare deal information.
Cheap Ferry Tickets
A ferry ticket, the one-way option, is 6.5 EURO. It is good for one hour, which does include switches.
When you cannot find ticket machines, the ticket is available onboard for an extra charge of 1 EURO.
However, this is only available if you immediately let the staff know that you need a ticket. When you do not do this, you get fined over 60 EURO.
You can save yourself from this hassle by buying a ticket from the machine.
Remember that every single ticket has to be validated at a water taxi stop when you get on. If you do not do this, you are fined.
Those that plan to often use the ferries should consider the All-Inclusive Transport Pass. It is much cheaper and allows you to save a lot of cash that can then be saved on treats for you.
Book A Hotel That Is Close To A Water Taxi Stop
This does not necessarily save you money but it makes everything highly convenient. In Venice, you do not want to drag luggage far since this is highly uncomfortable.
The best thing that you can do is to find a hotel that is close to a water taxi and that is close to the main attractions you are interested in.
You will end up saving some money on transport but the most important thing is that you save time.
Consider Visiting the Outer Islands
When you spend most of the time in the center of Venice, you spend more since this is where the most popular attractions are.
If you are short for cash though, seriously consider Venice’s outer islands. As an example, go to Murano and Burano since they should not be missed. Island hopping is a wonderful way to enjoy the city as locals do.
Also, if you love to fish, head over to Gatto Nero, which is located on Burano. If you want to enjoy a great beach, just go to Lido.
Eat Where Locals Eat
This is the advice you always get when you visit any destination in the world and Venice is no different. Learn all that you can about the very best restaurants based on what locals say, not tourists.
When the locals choose a place, it means that the food is authentic and prices are usually quite affordable.
Keep in mind that many great and affordable places to eat are close to popular attractions. It is just that they are not widely advertised.
However, these days you can find anything online so conduct research and you will save a lot of money on food.
Find The Very Best Ice-Cream (gelato)
You simply cannot visit Venice or Italy and not eat gelato. The best gelaterias give you access to options even if you are lactose intolerant or vegan, like sorbetto made out of fruit.
When in Venice, the best thing that you can do if you want great gelato is to ask some locals.
Also, you do want to avoid the places that take advantage of you right from the start. You do this by looking at the color of the ice-cream.
The best gelato is natural and contains natural flavors. This means that if you see that the color is too bright, it actually has artificial flavors.
Pistachio should never look bright green and banana flavor should not be bright yellow.
